Raleigh Plastic Surgery Center Supports Race for the Cure with Event Sponsorship
New program allows medical community to show support for breast cancer awareness and education
RALEIGH, NC, April 22, 2009 /Cosmetic Surgery PR News/ -- Raleigh Plastic Surgery Center (RPSC), a leader in providing aesthetic and reconstructive excellence, is the first medical practice to join the Susan G. Komen for the Cure's brand new sponsorship program—Doctors for the Cure. This new program allows the medical community to demonstrate their commitment to eradicating breast cancer and to show support for patients fighting this disease. This year's 13th Annual Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure will be held on Saturday, June 13 and will start and finish on the Meredith College Campus in Raleigh.
The Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure is the largest foot-race in North Carolina, attracting more than 24,000 walkers, runners and spectators in 2008. This event has raised more than $10 million to support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs. Supporting the efforts of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is inline with RPSC's core values and objectives. The surgeons of RPSC have seen firsthand the effects that breast cancer has on women—both emotionally and physically. Although the profession is often associated with the nip and tuck aspects of plastic surgery, it's the reconstructive aspect that truly defines what Raleigh Plastic Surgery Center is all about.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women and is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. In 2005 (the most recent year numbers are available), 186,467 women and 1,764 men were diagnosed with breast cancer.
Someone familiar with this issue is Kathi Sharp, breast cancer survivor and RPSC Surgery Center Coordinator. "When I was diagnosed with breast cancer over 16 years ago, it was a plastic surgeon in Knoxville, Tennessee that recommended I visit Raleigh Plastic Surgery Center and Dr. William Lambeth," recalls Sharp, now in her 15th year at RPSC. "The results of my surgery were beyond my expectations and hopes. The physicians at Raleigh Plastic Surgery Center have seen the devastation of breast cancer and realize the hope that reconstructive surgery can bring. They not only restored my body, but they restored my spirit. For that I am eternally indebted."
Says Nancy Nicoll O'Neill, RPSC Administrator, "With every success story like Kathi's, we also know that there are stories that don't end as well. We're proud of our continuing sponsorship and involvement in this year's Race for the Cure and look forward to the day when a cure is found for this devastating and deadly disease."
